BMW Isetta
Collector Story
Saw this fully restored BMW Isetta at the Marconi Museum in Tustin, CA. If you haven't been there I'd highly recommend it. They have a memorable collection of vehicles including this gem. It impresses me that BMW was building these unique four wheel, manual transmission "cars" way back in the day. The innovation was alive and well even when there were no electronics involved.
Why It Matters
The BMW Isetta stands as an iconic symbol of post-war automotive innovation, representing a unique intersection of engineering creativity and economic necessity in the 1950s. With just over 160,000 units produced, its rarity elevates its status among collectors, cementing it as a cherished artifact of automotive history. The Isetta's distinctive design—culminating in its bubble-like shape and front-opening door—reflects cultural shifts towards compact and efficient personal transport, making it not only a conversation starter but also a testament to a bygone era of ingenuity. As collectors increasingly seek to preserve and celebrate such pieces of automotive heritage, the Isetta's presence at the Marconi Museum enriches our understanding of the evolution of mobility and the lasting impact of small-car designs on the industry.
