Gilmore Car Museum

There are museums and then there are places. The Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan is a place. Set on 90 acres of farmland in the southwestern part of the state, the campus consists of 22 vintage barns — structures rescued, relocated, and restored — each housing a different segment of the collection. Moving from barn to barn across open farmland, past a 1941 Texaco filling station still dispensing atmosphere, past a working diner that predates the postwar boom, produces a quality of experience that museum interiors fundamentally cannot replicate.

Donald Gilmore began collecting in the 1960s on a property his family had owned for decades. His premise was simple: if you have enough space, you can tell the whole story. Over the following decades, the Gilmore became a destination for affiliate organizations — the Cadillac-LaSalle Club, the Lincoln Motor Car Heritage Museum, the Motorcycles & Memories exhibit, the Franklin collection — each occupying its own barn with its own specific gravity. The aggregate effect is a campus where you can follow a single thread for an afternoon, or let the buildings determine your path.

The collection numbers over 400 vehicles spanning more than a century, with particular depth in American brass-era pioneers, pre-war luxury cars, and postwar classics. The 1899 Locomobile Steam Car and the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 represent the poles of what the Gilmore contains. Neither feels out of place. Families visit and are genuinely absorbed. Serious collectors visit and stay longer than they intended. A self-guided walking tour is available, but the best approach is to arrive without a plan.
