BMW Museum

The bowl-shaped structure that houses the BMW Museum has stood beside BMW's four-cylinder headquarters tower in Munich since 1973 — which means it has been part of the city's skyline long enough to feel permanent. Unlike many manufacturer museums that opened with the primary purpose of selling cars, the BMW Museum has always had a more restless ambition: to examine design, technology, and the idea that a machine can carry both cultural meaning and genuine feeling.

The 2008 renovation transformed its interior into seven themed Houses, each dedicated to a different dimension of BMW's history. The House of Motorcycles is one of the finest single-topic exhibits in European automotive culture. The House of Racing traces BMW's motorsport engagement from the 1930s forward, including the M1 — a mid-engined supercar created in collaboration with Lamborghini that BMW built to homologate for racing, sold to the public, and eventually turned into one of the most beloved collector cars of the era. Andy Warhol painted one of them.

The museum sits next to BMW Welt, the brand's delivery and experience center that opened in 2007. Together, the two buildings create an ecosystem rather than a single attraction — new car buyers collect their vehicles in a ceremony that has become something of a pilgrimage in its own right. Many collectors schedule Munich trips around both, pairing a morning in the museum with an afternoon in BMW Welt's expansive floors. The collection spans 125 vehicles and motorcycles. Allow time for both buildings — the museum provides the history and the House of Motorcycles alone justifies the journey from Munich's city centre.
